American Mathematical Society Prizes AMS Böcher Prize The Bôcher Memorial Prize was founded in memory of Professor Maxime Bôcher with an original endowment of $1,450. It is the oldest of the prizes offered by the American Mathematical Society. It is awarded every five years for a notable research memoir in analysis that has appeared during the past six years in a recognized North American journal. This provision, introduced in 1971 and modified in 1993, is a liberalization of the original terms of the award. It is now awarded every three years. AMS Cole Prize for algebra AMS Cole Prize for number theory The Frank Nelson Cole Prize in Algebra and the Frank Nelson Cole Prize in Number Theory were founded in honour of Professor Frank Nelson Cole on the occasion of his retirement as secretary of the American Mathematical Society after twenty-five years of service and as editor-in-chief of the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society for twenty-one years. The present award is $5,000. The prizes were awarded at two different five-year intervals for contributions to algebra and the theory of numbers, but the intervals have been reduced to three years. The award is for a notable research memoir that has appeared during the past six years in a recognized North American journal and only members of the American Mathematical Society are eligible. AMS Levi L Conant Prize This prize is to recognize the best expository paper published in either the Notices of the AMS or the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society in the preceding five years. AMS Ruth Lyttle Satter Prize Prize Joan S Birman established this prize in 1990 in honour of her sister Ruth Lyttle Satter. It was aimed at recognising research achievement and also to encourage women working in mathematics. AMS Leroy P Steele Prize A bequest from Leroy P Steele endowed this prize which was first awarded in 1970. It was set up to honour George David Birkhoff, William Fogg Osgood, and William Caspar Graustein. From 1970 to 1976 the prize was given for outstanding published mathematical research, preference given to work which was broad and particularly well written. In 1976 the Council of the American Mathematical Society decided to award three categories of Leroy P Steele Prizes. These were Lifetime Achievement, Mathematical Exposition, and Seminal Contribution to Research. In 1994 the last of these three categories was put onto a five year cycle of topics: analysis, algebra, applied mathematics, geometry and topology, and discrete mathematics/logic. This last area would alternate between the two topics so that discrete mathematics would be the topic of the award once every ten years. AMS Veblen Prize The Oswald Veblen Prize was established to honour Oswald Veblen. It was endowed by his friends and colleagues, but later the widow of Professor Veblen doubled the amount of the fund. It is given in recognition for work in geometry or topology by a member of the American Mathematical Society which is published in a North American journal. AMS Norbert Wiener Prize The Norbert Wiener Prize, to be awarded for applied mathematics in the highest and broadest sense. It was established in 1967 to honour Norbert Wiener. It was endowed by a fund from the Department of Mathematics of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The prize is jointly made by the American Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Only members of the two societies resident in the United States, Canada, or Mexico are eligible. AMS/SIAM Garrett Birkhoff Prize The George David Birkhoff Prize in Applied Mathematics is a joint award by the American Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. It is awarded every three years: for an outstanding contribution to applied mathematics in the highest and broadest sense. The initial endowment came from the family of G D Birkhoff and the prize is restricted to a member of one of the two societies who is resident in the United States, Canada, or Mexico. AMS Delbert Ray Fulkerson Prize The Fulkerson Prize for outstanding papers in the area of discrete mathematics is sponsored jointly by the Mathematical Programming Society (MPS) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS). Up to three awards of US$1500 each are presented at each (triennial) International Symposium of the MPS. Originally, the prizes were paid out of a memorial fund administered by the AMS that was established by friends of the late Delbert Ray Fulkerson to encourage mathematical excellence in the fields of research exemplified by his work.
